Millions Lost The Unrealized Potential of Entrepreneurship and Disability

We often read that people with a disability are especially good at solving problems, have a surplus of resilience, and utilize soft skills–like empathy–to better adapt to the world. If solving problems, resilience, and soft skills–like empathy–are common and requisite traits for entrepreneurs, why are so few people with a disability entrepreneurs, or working with entrepreneurs? What biases and narratives still exist that continue leaving people with a disability out of these opportunities? And what can we do to shift these narratives so that more companies recognize the latent and untapped potential in the disability community to start businesses or help businesses thrive? Entrepreneurs with a disability share their stories, as a way to shed light on the millions of people who are facing unnecessary roadblocks that often prevent them from realizing their true entrepreneurial potential and contributing their genius to the world.

The Nuance of Disability: “Because of,” NOT “In Spite Of”

A film director and producer, along with a writer, share their stories as creatives who embraced their disability and made a conscious choice to flourish because of it, not in spite of it. As a result, their work is now reclaiming the narrative around disability and portraying it not as a burden, but instead, simply as another essential consideration within which to work, much like a budget or a guideline. When reframed like this, disability changes from an afterthought or a legal requirement to a welcome and helpful element that, along with others, guides the ingenuity, design, beauty, and usefulness of the end result because it tells a better story from all angles.

Universal Design: How "Inclusive Architecture" Benefits Businesses & People

Michael Kimmelman, the architecture critic of The New York Times, wrote that the planning and designing of public and commercial spaces for accessibility and diversity shouldn’t be seen as a requirement, but instead, as an opportunity, both economic and creative. And he also emphasized that such a vision required a shift in mindset: Universal Design (UD).

With one in four American adults living with a disability, it’s hard to believe that only a handful of organizations and institutions have truly embraced the benefits of Universal Design, but for some reason, it is still largely misunderstood and rarely applied.

Did you know that universally designed spaces don't cost significantly more, are just as aesthetically pleasing, and lead to healthier, more inclusive, and productive environments for more people?

This program will change forever–and for the better–the way you look at commercial buildings, public spaces, and bathrooms.

Join Gustavo Serafini, host of the Enabled Disabled Podcast, and his guests, Jonathan White, Director of Design Consulting at the IDEA Center in SUNY Buffalo, and Julie Sawchuk, Accessibility Consultant, in a dynamic dialog about the big and small benefits that businesses–and the people in them–derive from UD.

In this conversation you will discover:

The main goals businesses usually have when designing their commercial spaces

How YOUR experience changes, and what you can expect, as a user of universally designed public or commercial spaces

What your future house, office building, school, library, government agencies, and shopping centers will look like when they are universally designed

And so much more!

[Rebroadcast] Kimberly Warner

[Rebroadcast] Kimberly Warner

Kimberly Warner is a film director, editor and producer based in Portland, Oregon. After receiving her degree in Pre-Med and Biology at Colorado College and pursuing her Masters degree at National University of Naturopathic Medicine, Kimberly abruptly changed paths and has never looked back. Her work, still founded in a passion for the psychological and social patterns that influence healing, has traded herbs for a camera, prescriptions for storytelling.

Kimberly has written, shot, directed and edited narrative films, webisodes and corporate and non-profit brand videos. She’s written and directed two of her own narrative short films and both have screened at film festivals globally and garnered numerous awards. Her films have streamed and been distributed on Oregon Public Broadcasting and The Disorder Channel on Amazon devices.

In 2015, Kimberly developed cervicogenic vertigo and Mal de Débarquement Syndrome, an incurable neurological disorder that manifests as a feeling of constant rocking, bobbing or swaying. As months turned to years, her sense of self dissipated as her relationship to her body, her career and her community faded. At forty years young, she watched the rest of the world continue on while she was stuck trying to figure out how to put her pants back on.

After years of isolation and desperately chasing a fix, Kimberly realized the chase was making her more sick. So she decided to learn how to say “yes” - yes to the messy, uncomfortable, painful journey of being alive and how to incorporate it into a bigger, fuller definition of herself. She founded Unfixed Media Productions in 2019 as way to find others who are doing the same, have honest conversations and demonstrate that our wounds and weaknesses are our strengths, they complete us and they equip us to help others.

These inevitable peaks and valleys of living with an incurable, chronic condition are part of an expanding Unfixed portfolio that currently includes a docu-series, podcast, round-table webcast and feature documentary film all in production.

Unfixed Media Productions has led to Kimberly’s larger advocacy role within the chronic illness community where, alongside directing and producing media, she writes and speaks about her own patient experiences and how healing can exist even when our bodies can’t be cured. She is the 2020 recipient of the Invisible Disabilities Association’s Media Impact Award.

When Kimberly isn’t nurturing and developing the many facets of Unfixed, she works a small, sustainable homestead with her husband in rural Oregon. www.unfixedfilm.com www.kimberlywarner.com

Seasoned interior designer and expert thinker on sustainable living, Shelly brings 20 years of experience to the interior design community and continues to contribute to the national conversation on sustainable, adaptive design and its impact on human health and well-being. She has built her career in design on the premise of “living well”, an ideology that for Shelly, goes far beyond creating beautiful spaces.

“Interior design can upgrade safety, boost mood, improve relationships and increase the value of our largest investment, our home or business, and how we think, feel and behave within the space.”

-Shelly Rosenberg

Shelly has mastered the multifaceted approach required for achieving sustainable living and believes a sustainable environment should be available to all, regardless of the unique needs various individuals may require. Although her designs are always stunning, her priority is less on creating physical beauty, and more on helping others improve their overall quality of life. She does this by composing supportive and adaptive environments that help foster mental, emotional and physical well-being, as well as environments that accelerate growth, awareness and human progress.

As a mother of three children, each with learning differences and special needs, her ability to identify and honor everyone’s unique design requirements has grown exponentially. Shelly has dedicated her profession to creating and designing adaptive spaces catered towards the differently abled and has a keen ability to listen to needs first and design accordingly.

From creating and designing spaces to offering product recommendations and instructional courses, Shelly’s work is shaped and formed by the unique needs of those she is serving in the moment. Her work focuses on providing adaptive design that translates across various populations, as she has a heart for both the provision of services to the differently abled and the accessibility of these services for those who may not have the means to hire a full-service design firm. Shelly meets her constituents where they are and provides a creative and innovative solution for helping all in need of adaptive, sustainable design.

Hi, I am Steven Thompson. I am a Creative Content Creator.

I start and complete projects.

By day I am an educator, a school administrator to be exact, my title is The Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction. I work with teachers and students with special needs. I left the classroom in 2007 and have been an administrator since. I consider myself more teacher than administrator.

When the day is over, I turn to my creative endeavors.
- I am the host of a Podcast called The Steven Thompson Experience
- I write a daily blog about life and my experiences
- I am a published author - you can buy my debut novel here
- I publish a newsletter called A Shot of Dopamine

I play the saxophone, buy more books than I can read, hang out with my wife, and son, go to church and watch lots of sports.

I have lived in Los Angeles for the last 20 years but I am still a die-hard Chicago sports fan. Chicago is where was born and raised. You can take the man out of the Midwest but the Midwest values of hard work, service, and caring for others still remains.

Oh yes, one more thing. I love to drink coffee, and go to Coffee Shops.

If we ever meet in person I promise to listen, ask questions , and I won’t talk about myself.

Even writing a biography makes me feel uncomfortable. That is ok, because we all are a bit uncomfortable and it is ok to admit it.

Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes. For professional motorcycle rider Gene Buonomo, it's in the form of his 14 year-old son, Decklan. While Gene can impressively guide a 150mph motorcycle on the country’s top tracks, his strength doesn’t compare to Decklan’s, who lives with down syndrome.

Life has presented challenges for Decklan from the get-go, as he was born with duodenal atresia, a condition affecting only 1 out of every 7,500 babies. Surviving surgery was one thing, but managing Decklan’s down syndrome is a daily challenge for not only Decklan but Gene, who is a single parent to three sons, juggles two jobs and races professionally on the weekends.
The National Down Syndrome Society, or NDSS, was Gene and Decklan’s saving grace, providing them with resources, programs and a community to connect with others fighting the same fight to give children with down syndrome a normal life, helping them land jobs and providing health information to parents.

That is why in his rookie season on the MotoAmerica circuit, Gene will sport the NDSS logo on his leathers, giving thanks, showing support and raising awareness for the society that has saved his family. Decklan will be alongside his dad each weekend of competition, cheering him on as his unofficial racing manager and pit master.

A majority of staff and board members are people with disabilities. Consumers, not professionals, set their own independent living goals. Consumers are offered the option of developing an independent living plan, but they may elect to waive such a plan and just receive services.

A majority of our board and staff and staff members are people with disabilities.

My name is Jeff Rubin. I have been a teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition for almost forty years, which has served as my North Star through some very difficult times.  Unconditional Healing came about through my personal journey with a progressive degenerative illness, which first surfaced all the way back in 1999.   Even after visiting dozens of health practitioners, and undergoing countless tests, I was unable to secure a firm diagnosis, never mind a cure.

In 2006, inspired by my own experiences of working with my illness, and by my study of various teachings on working with illness and pain, I developed a program entitled "Unconditional Healing: Embracing Illness and Adversity and Discovering One's True Self. The workshop presented bedrock principles of unconditional health and well-being and a unique way of working with painful situations that reduced one's suffering, fears, and feelings of helplessness immensely.  In addition, the ability to meet with others in an open and frank forum was a game-changer for me, soothing my feelings of isolation. The workshop was well received, and I have since offered it at a variety of places around the country.  I also learned that this approach could help people not only to cope, but even to thrive while undergoing immense difficulties.

In response to the workshops, and the need for ongoing support for people who were struggling, I established  group meetings called Healing Circles. Healing Circles are support groups that meet

regularly in a safe confidential environment for those wishing to be acknowledged and heard without judgment.  Unlike other support groups that form around a specific malady or illness, Healing Circles coalesce around a desire to not only acknowledge and support each other through tough times,  but to use our difficulties to transform ourselves and find our deepest self.   We ask - what can I learn from my pain and how can I use it to become gentler, wiser, and more resilient?  Healing Circles are now operating in Manhattan and Los Angeles,

Please read more about the Healing Circles here.

While my journey has been difficult for me and for those that I love, I now see it as a blessing, bringing a sense of focus and urgency to my life, along with the opportunity to share what I have learned and experienced.  It was with that motivation that I created this website to reach a broader audience looking for support, community and resources to help unlock their own storehouse of resiliency and confidence in the face of difficulties.  I hope you will find a measure of solace, support and wisdom from the various offerings within, and from studying and practicing together as a community.

My name is Aaron Busch, I am a licensed Travel Agent through Guide Me Away with a supplemental specialty in accessible travel for individuals with mobility challenges.

Prior to becoming a Travel Agent, I booked my trips through reputable Travel Agencies in British Columbia. While the bulk of these Travel Agents claimed to be proficient in booking these itineraries, the repercussions from not making adequate inquiries resulted in (1) partial or irreparable damage to my wheelchair on multiple occasions or (2) the awkward disembarkation from the plane because they could not load the wheelchair into cargo. This primarily happens when the mobility device is too large to be enplaned and is a direct result of the booking party’s inadequate communication with the client and the Airline.

As time progressed, I became more self-sufficient in the travel planning process. I began to transition from booking through third parties upon recognizing that certain Travel Agents would book the itinerary but neglected to collect or relay any relevant information that might disrupt my travel plans. Concurrently, the Airline would be waiting on specific information relative to the specifications of my wheelchair (at the responsibility of such Travel Agents) which I had to rectify. This is a prerequisite in the stipulations of booking a traveler with a disability and the result of such carelessness can be catastrophic.

In 2019, I graduated from the Canadian Tourism College and joined the team at Guide Me Away as a licensed Travel Agent / Disability Travel Specialist, proudly accommodating travelers from all walks of life.

Steve Schwier (Second Interview)

Steve Schwier (Second Interview)

Steve Schwier is back for a second episode here on Enabled Disabled! Welcome back.

“I have dealt with meniere's disease for 9 years. I did very little in that time but learn how to manage my new life. I decided to start advocating for my silent suffering community. I rode an e-bike from Denver to Columbus. It was a success and i decided to write a memoir of my adventure. I am a cast member on the upcoming docu-series the life Rebalanced Chronicles.” - Steve Schwier

Steve Schwier is an author, activists, and cast member of the new documentary Life Rebalance Chronicles. Steve has meniere's disease, a disorder that causes vertigo, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound. We started the podcast as friendly strangers. After an hour, I realized I gained a friend. Steve is funny, direct, passionate, and brimming with energy. He doesn't shy away from his difficulties, but he's also seeing himself change because his work is changing people's lives. His book "On the VertiGO” chronicles the journey he took with his brother a grueling 1400 miles bike ride from Denver to Columbus, Ohio.

The purpose, to show people the pain and the beauty of what it's like to have an invisible disability. Steve is making the invisible visible, and people are realizing that they're not alone. I can't wait to read it and have him back for a second episode. If you're enjoying the podcast,

Walking with Anthony

Walking with Anthony

In the late morning of February 6, 2010, Anthony Purcell dove into the waters of Miami Beach, something he'd done many times before without incident. This time, he misjudged the depth of his landing spot, broke his neck, and bruised the C5 and C6 vertabrae in his spine. He injured his spinal cord. He was paralyzed, unable to resurface from the water on his own.

Thanks to the quick rescue efforts of his cousin Bernie who pulled him from the waters and the emergency personnel who quickly arrived at the scene, Anthony's life was saved. But his life would never be the same.

Physical rehabilitation commenced soon after. Initial, intensive rehab at a dedicated facility typically requires an average of 3 to 6 months for a patient with spinal cord injury. Anthony's insurance coverage ran out after 20 days. His case wasn't the exception. It was the norm. Standard insurance, even excellent insurance, simply doesn't cover rehab the way individuals suffering from SCI need it. The Purcell family was shocked, horrified, and instantly committed to doing something about it.

As for Anthony himself, his family was able to afford rehab treatment at another facility. Anthony was one of the few individuals with SCI who was able to continue to receive the treatment he needed and access the equipment and assistance necessary to live beyond the depressing, defeating resignation of accepting the standard medical prognosis: "You're just going to have to get used to living in a wheelchair."

Anthony didn't accept that life sentence. His mother, Micki Purcell, refused even to accept the word paralysis for her son, and she wouldn't accept it for the thousands upon thousands of other people each year who would suffer spinal cord injuries. She founded a charity in Anthony's name, Walking With Anthony, and fueled it with her love and passion for laying a new pathway for people with spinal cord injuries to follow. Her vision and fierce resilience have given Anthony and so many people like him something they needed just as much as therapy: hope.

Even with access to the therapy he needed, Anthony still struggled with the depression and hopelessness everyone with SCI faces. The personal struggle over SCI is more than one person can face alone. Anthony understands the emotional anguish that comes with SCI like no one else can. He has met with hundreds of his brothers and sisters in the SCI community and given them a sense of assurance and purpose they might never find without the help of Anthony and this foundation.

Walking With Anthony has helped Anthony join forces with others trying valiantly to walk the path of living victoriously over the physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges of SCI. and everyone who supports Walking With Anthony joins them on that journey.

Frederico Carpinteiro - Adapt Tech

Frederico Carpinteiro - Adapt Tech

Frederico did his Masters in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering in FEUP, Portugal before attending programs in start-up acceleration and technology commercialization, which were both completed in 2015. Before founding Adapttech, Frederico was a researcher for a Portuguese research group, BioStar, in bio-related image processing and analysis.

During his Masters degree, he realized that there was a gap in the health market: most of the research efforts in this field were directed to find the definitive solution to a problem, and that there was no one trying to find a solution that would improve the quality of life of people with physical limitations while the definitive solution does not exist.

Frederico’s vision led to the development of the company’s lead product, INSIGHT, which is designed to improve the fitting process of lower-limb prostheses. It combines a laser scanner, biosensors, wearable technology, and a mobile app to make it faster and easier to correctly fit prostheses and monitor a patient’s rehabilitation process.

Adapttech was founded in 2015 and within a year of launching the company, the team had grown to 10 people and continues to expand. Now the company has around 20 employees and three offices in different countries: United Kingdom - HQ, Portugal – R&D, and United States - Sales.

In 2021, Fred was chosen as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Europe Class of 2021, in the Science & Healthcare category. Frederico is now part of the world’s most impactful community of young entrepreneurs and game-changers.

Laura Friedman

Laura Friedman

Laura Friedman is the Vice President, Communications and Program Governance at Citibank.

Through her life and career, Laura has been an outspoken advocate for those with hearing loss. She believes that if people choose to participate in the speaking and listening world, it’s important that they seek treatment. She also believes this choice could positively impact their career and well-being.

When she was two years old, Laura’s parents took her to half a dozen doctors. They noticed that she was not speaking or responding to sounds and relied on lip-reading to understand what was being said to her. It wasn’t until 18 months later that she was diagnosed with moderate-to-severe hearing loss.

“Like 90 percent of other children who are deaf or have a hearing difficulty, I was born to parents with typical hearing,” says Laura. “I thank my grandfather for giving my mother this advice. He said, ‘If you don’t try teaching her language now, you’ll never know if she’s capable or not.’ From that day on, my parents were determined to have me learn to listen and talk. If I failed, I would have failed trying. It was then that my parents had me fitted for hearing aids.”

Laura’s mother fiercely advocated for her when she was younger, and was a great role model for Laura to look up to. When Laura was diagnosed, her mother did all she could to make sure she had the resources she needed and the right team of people behind her.

“My mom believed in me and my abilities, ignoring the so-called experts and naysayers who said I would never partake in the oral-communication world, learn language, or hear,” says Laura.

Laura has shattered stigmas and proven many people wrong throughout her life. She loves to travel and has been to 24 countries so far. She is currently the Assistant Director of Communications at Workforce Opportunity Services, and is heavily involved in her community.

Much of her community service has been focused on helping others with hearing loss. She is:

A member of the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, Disability Youth Council and Hearing Loss Taskforce.
A peer mentor for children with hearing loss at the Center for Hearing and Communication in NYC
The founder of HearsHelp.com, which provides social advice for children and young adults with hearing loss

“Treating my hearing loss enables me to partake in any project and initiative I choose to take on,” says Laura. “While having hearing loss makes certain tasks more difficult like large conference calls, it also has its advantages. My hearing loss has made me into a very perceptive, detail-oriented and creative individual. Thanks to the challenges I endured as a child with hearing loss, I’m confident that I can overcome anything that comes my way.”

Elizabeth Jameson

Elizabeth Jameson

Elizabeth Jameson is an artist and writer who explores what it means to live in an imperfect body as part of the universal human experience. Before her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, she served as a public interest lawyer representing incarcerated children; she later represented children living with chronic illnesses and disabilities in their attempts to receive medically necessary care.

As her disease progressed, she began using her MRI’s to create art as a way of reclaiming agency of her own medical data. She transformed the unsettling, clinical images into work that invites people to open up conversations about what it means to have an illness or disability. Her work is part of permanent collections both nationally and internationally, including the National Institutes of Health, major universities, and medical schools.

She now writes personal essays and speaks across the country sharing her experiences living with illness and disability. Her essays have been published by The New York Times, British Medical Journal, WIRED magazine, and MIT’s Leonardo Journal. Her essay, “Losing Touch, Finding Intimacy,” was included in the New York Times book, About Us, released in September 2019 by Norton Publishing.

Many of her lectures at medical schools and symposiums have been recorded and shared, including her TedX talk, “Learning to Celebrate and Embrace Our Imperfect Bodies.”

Brianna Cardenas

Brianna Cardenas

Brianna Cardenas is a PA, an educator, an advocate and such an excellent example of a PA who is truly EMPOWERED.

Brianna was diagnosed at the age of 20 with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome which is a connective tissue disorder that can cause chronic joint and back pain. While she was getting her bachelor’s degree in athletic training, a physical therapist, identified her symptoms.

She only applied to one PA school. She states she could only afford one program but also that her illness would limit her ability to commute due to her chronic back pain. She now reflects that she didn’t realize this was one barrier she was faced with as an applicant.

She also reflects that her journey as a patient and PA and has motivated her to create HealedandEmpowered as a resource for those with chronic disabilities.

I've approached it in different ways and forms over the years, but at heart, I am a creative. To render a work of beauty in a world that can often seem cruel and unfeeling is one of the greatest acts of rebellion.

My first passion was, and still is, music. I've taught myself singing, guitar, drums, synths, composition, production, writing, and recording, and the combination of these outlets of manifestation is the closest expression of the truths in my heart and mind.

My second (but not secondary) drive is the pursuit of spirituality, occult science, and self-transformation. It's a path that began with a passing interest in the utility of meditation for emotion regulation, but over the past decade has grown into an ever-evolving and constant work of personal refinement. I am convinced that the synthesis of psychology, neurophysiology, psychiatry, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other modern modalities with the wisdom of the mysteries that has been passed through the ages will lead to the next great human revolution - the revolution of thought and feeling. I am here to bring about that change in myself, and then the world around me.

Auston Stamm "I was born with mild cerebral palsy, which affects my fine motor skill and visual processing. I was blessed to have a very supportive family and to be able to attend Westmark School in Southern California. Westmark specializes in teaching students with learning disabilities. Westmark helped me overcome my learning disability and succeed academically. I feel inspired every day to provide students with disabilities the supports they need to thrive in higher education institutions.

I am currently the Accessibility & Assistive Technology Coordinator at Saint Mary's College in Northern California. I am an expert in assistive technology solutions like text to speech, speech to text, and accessible web applications. I work with faculty to help them integrate universal design principles into their curriculum. I am also the faculty advisor for the DiverseAbilities Club on campus, which is a student-led club that arranges multiple disability awareness events each year.

Outside of my work I am on the board of directors of Ability Now Bay Area, which is a learning resource for people with cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities. Ability Now offers a wide range of in-person and online courses, along with organizational training in person-centered planning. I have been actively involved in helping upgrade their technology center with the latest assistive technology. Currently, I am working to expand their virtual online learning program and to leverage the latest HyFlex educational strategies.

I received my BA in Film Production from Loyola Marymount and my master's in occupational therapy from the University Of Southern California. I am currently working toward a doctorate in Educational Technology from Boise State University. I plan to explore how integrated learning management reminders can help students stay on top of their assignments. This kind of technology can be especially beneficial for students who have difficulties with organization and executive functioning. I am working on getting my Section 508 Trusted Tester certification, which is a free program provided by Homeland Security.

In my free time, I have started a YouTube Channel and website to cover stories and strategies relating to accessibility & disability rights. I am interested in exploring freelance opportunities that will allow me to develop my skills in accessibility and universal design."
