The Healthcare Confidential Podcast | Episode 35 "Implicit Bias with Dr. Robert O. Roswell" Theresa Jacobellis |

Countless studies have linked implicit bias impacted with not only negative patient outcomes but provider-patient interactions and treatment decisions. Our guest today, Robert O. Roswell, MD, FACP, FACC, is a leader in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine and is focused on the impact of implicit bias on disparities in health care access, delivery, and outcomes. As Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Associate Professor of Cardiology and Science Education at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, he oversees recruitment initiatives, pipeline programs, innovative and enhanced medical curricula to build towards health equity and inclusion. He talked about his career path, the importance of diversity in recruiting medical professionals, how to define and identify implicit bias, and the steps that providers can take to prevent implicit bias from affecting patient care.

The Take-Away: Covid-19 has highlighted the disparities that are inherent in our society and the way they play out in healthcare, but the data has been available for decades. As Covid-19 has brought this topic greater prominence in the national conversation, each of us can play a role in addressing implicit bias, disparities, and the structural basis for these issues.
