The Healthcare Confidential Podcast | Episode 36 "Gun Violence Prevention with Dr. Chethan Sathya" Theresa Jacobellis |

Gun violence is a leading cause of premature death in the United States, killing more than 38,000 people and causing 85,00 injuries each year. Our guest this week, Chethan Sathya, MD, is Director of Northwell Health’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention. He is also a pediatric trauma surgeon and National Institutes of Health-funded firearm injury prevention researcher, as well as a powerful voice and advocate for firearm injury prevention. He talks about Northwell’s initiative to frame gun violence prevention as a public health issue, as well as his $1.4 million NIH grant to study gun violence prevention and implement a first-of-its-kind protocol to universally screen patients to identify those at risk of firearm injury.

The Take-Away: Gun violence prevention is not a political issue, but rather a matter of public health. Providers can play an important role by opening a dialogue about firearms with their patients and offering resources for those who may benefit from education around gun safety.
