The Healthcare Confidential Podcast | Episode 38 "The Patient’s Voice with Steven Taibbi" Theresa Jacobellis |

Steven G. Taibbi had surgery for the first time on the day he drew his first breath. Since that day in April 1953, he has had many more operations including two heart transplants. A prolific writer, he published his memoir in 2019. After a career that included 25 years as a Producer/Director and Director of Photography for his own television production company, he went on to be the vice-president of Transplant Speakers International, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for transplant candidates, recipients, their families, and the families of organ and tissue donors. Steven shared his remarkable healthcare journey, including his earliest memories of being a terrified 5-year-old patient and the strategies he uses as an adult to cope with pain and discomfort (spoiler alert: gratitude plays a leading role). He also offered insightful advice to both patients and providers who want to improve the patient experience.

The Take-Away: Healing a patient who has suffered from illness or injury is not the doctor’s job. The physician simply promotes healing, but the patient must be fully invested in his or her own recovery for true healing to occur.
