Tolkien deserves to be taken seriously as a war writer so we compared him with previous war writers, ranging from Tolstoy, Thackeray to Shakespeare, then put him alongside his contemporaries, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, the war poets, Cecil Lewis, etc. plus a visit to a modern writer, Tamora Pierce who remembers the human cost in the shape of displaced people and refugees.
