Balancing Theory vs Practice | Identify and Remove Barriers in your Life
Don't let your past failures or your fear of failure hold you back from taking action and living your best life. In this episode, you will learn: 1. What are the things that prevent us from taking action and moving from theory to practice? 2. What are the rewards of taking action and executing your plans? 3. How do you balance the two out just a little bit?
"Most surprisingly though, success is a common fear. What happens if our lofty plans succeed? Will that change us? Will it be enough to satisfy us? What comes next? After that? What will people expect from us if we actually achieve something?"
I'm Brent, and today I want to talk about balancing theory versus practice. A lot of us get stuck in the planning and theorizing phase because we're afraid of failure, doubt our abilities, or are too comfortable. We might also enjoy learning and planning so much that we never take action. Perfectionism, worrying about other people, and bad experiences can also hold us back. And sometimes we think it's too late to act on our plans. But if we don't take action, we'll never reach our full potential.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. What are the things that prevent us from taking action and moving from theory to practice?
2. What are the rewards of taking action and executing your plans?
3. How do you balance the two out just a little bit?

Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:00] - The Fallible Man podcast is hosted by Brent. The first half of the show is about theory, and the second half is about the rewards of taking action and executing your plans. The show will wrap it up with balancing the two out just a little bit.
[00:00:37] - The Fall of man podcast is about how men can reach their potential and grow into the men they dream of being while taking care of their responsibilities, working and being good husbands, fathers, and still take care of themselves. Brent explains why men are afraid of success and self doubt.
[00:02:52] - Comfort is the enemy of action. Most successful people learn to embrace temporary discomfort if it helps them get to long-term gains. Taking action, especially if it's a major or new action, often includes some level of discomfort. Maybe you want to get in better shape, but there's going to be some physical discomfort.
[00:04:21] - Some people enjoy planning, learning, theorizing and researching a lot. They might not enjoy putting the plan into action. It's fun to research and to look into, but you have to get moving. Fun can be an absolute derailment from where you want to go and achieve in your plan.
[00:06:53] - Some people get caught up in the myth of perfectionism and worry about other people's opinion. Mr. Beast is one of the biggest YouTubers in the world, but his first videos were messy and bad. He was afraid to start a podcast because he was afraid of their opinion. Worrying about other people interferes with getting to the action phase and locks you into the theorizing planning phase. Worrying is never going to benefit you, and it's not going to make your life better, so you need to work on getting out of that.
[00:12:33] - Most of us have had bad experiences in the past, and we let them define our current life. If you have big dreams and plans in your past and then failed, you might be a little gun shy to try it again. You have to stop letting bad experiences define you and hold you in that planning theorizing zone.
[00:14:35] - There are eight reasons why people don't act on their plans. The most common one is that they worry it's too late. This fear keeps people in the planning phase. In the second half of the show, they will talk about taking action.
[00:18:07] - The Phoenix Conference is coming up February 10-11th in Quincy, Washington. Oliver Marcel, Jim Fuller Dai Manuel and David Pasqualone are going to speak at the conference. Tickets are on sale now on wwwfalliblemancom/thephoenix. Early bird pricing is up.
[00:19:47] - To live your best life, you have to move in the direction of the purpose that you were intended for. In the first half of the show, we talked about the things that prevent us from moving out of the theory stage and into the practice state and planning into actual action. In this half, we're going to get into the benefits and rewards of taking action and pursuing those plans.
[00:20:53] - Satisfaction is better than happiness. When we act on our goals, we accomplish more, leading to more feelings of satisfaction and more pride in ourselves. Planning and theorizing is important, but we need to put the plans into practice to achieve our goals.
[00:22:40] - Many people struggle to find motivation to follow their dreams. Taking action is what leads to motivation, not vice versa. When we put our plans into action, we get to learn a lot and gain a lot of life experience. I talk about the difference between education and practical knowledge all the time.
[00:26:38] - After accomplishing something, the first thing people think about is what's next? When they accomplish something, they want to accomplish more goals. They want to learn new skills and improve their current ones. They also want to inspire their friends and colleagues to do the same. By acting on your plans, you minimize your regrets in the future. No matter how thorough our plans are, we can't plan for everything. You can never know what new and exciting opportunities might present itself while you're working towards your goals. The Wedge system is a protocol to guide you through the process.
[00:36:38] - The Fallback Man podcast is your home for everything man husband and father. The show went through eight common things that keep us in the theory planning zone. It's important to identify the weaknesses in your life and then seek solutions. The Fallback Man wants to come alongside you as part of the Fallible Nation and encourage you to jump on his website.
