#019 Cause of Death: My name is Marcell Engel and I work as a crime scene cleaner. It will happen every now and then in my podcast that we dive very deeply into what is happening. I will talk about it openly. By that I mean that liquids, such as, blood as an element will be the smallest problem. I am looking forward to taking you on a mind trip into my world as a crime scene cleaner.

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: Hello and welcome to a new episode of my podcast Cause of Death. It's great to have you on. This is Marcel, the crime scene cleaner. Routines in life should never be unreflective. There are things we just know how to do. Driving a car, doing things at work that come easily to us and just certain routines in life, but they can also become dangerous for us or for others. On Christmas eve 24.12. already many, many years ago I had a crime scene cleaning, which fits exactly with this topic. It was an emergency call from the police, who asked me to please come over. We need you to clean up a traffic area. A traffic area in a parking garage. Although I was called in privately because there were traces of blood and that can have many, many causes. And I did not find out anything else. I drove to a parking level, crossed a barrier into the parking garage, and I could see a police vehicle on the left side of the lower parking level at the end of the driveway. Next to this parking garage was a road outside the parking garage and the garage was built on stilts with no walls outside. And there was an ambulance on the outside of this driveway. In the middle of this lane of this parking garage was a Mercedes van, a Vito 9-seater in black, damaged at the rear, otherwise you could not see so much from a distance at first. I then drove to the scene. The police just talked to people. So, it was a policewoman and a policeman. They each had someone with them and a notepad and you could clearly see that they were probably questioning witnesses. The ambulance itself was taped up you couldn’t see anything.

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: Nothing could be seen on the windows either. A blue light was on top. So, I assumed that someone had been injured and that the vehicle was on the road, so I thought that an accident had probably happened. I then went over to a gentleman in yellow. That was the tow truck driver and I asked him first, what happened anyway? And he told me, "Well, the driver of the Vito must have hit a person while pulling out of the parking space. The police then saw me at that moment with the tow truck driver, and waved us both over. They then instructed the tow truck driver to remove the vehicle from the roadway, so that there is also normal traffic flow again. And I was then asked to clear the area where the police car was standing, namely in front of an SUV, and on the ground, you could see an aluminum blanket that was covered in blood and you could clearly see that there was something underneath this blanket. I could see that in the outlines. And yes, this on this heat protection blanket itself. It is so very thin. It really stuck to the floor. The police then asked me to cordon off this accident traffic area, i.e., we then planned visual protection, which is also often done by the fire department, in order to simply not offer a stage to potential onlookers. And then I took these folding walls out of the vehicle, set them up, and the policewoman came to me and told me what had happened.

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: Cause of Death. The podcast. The victim.

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: It must have been that the Vito driver, an elderly gentleman, in his routine, confused the accelerator and brake pedal when backing out of the parking space and with such extreme force, reversing, crashed into the SUV where a lady was standing who wanted to load her Christmas shopping, groceries and gifts into the trunk. And what was under the cover were the gift bags and the grocery bags. And yes, you could really tell by the SUV what high speed he must have pushed the woman into her own vehicle. There was blood on the carpet in the trunk. When I knew where the food bag was laying, I suspected a lot of liquid that came out of the food bag. But no, it was actually mostly blood. So, I lifted the blanket, then I pulled the whole thing together a bit and threw it in a barrel. This mush and this slurry. And then I could see, oh dear. So, someone was really badly injured. And then I asked the policewoman, what happened to the lady? Is she in the hospital? And then she said, yes, so her state of knowledge is that she died on the way to the hospital.

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: She died of her severe injuries, which I already guessed from the huge pool of blood and the blood in the trunk, on the way to the hospital. I imagined then again pictures in my head. Christmas Eve. And how that must feel for the people who are left? Someone leaves the house, says goodbye, I'm going to do some quick shopping and I mean, that's always a stressful program on the 24th anyway. I do this Christmas shopping myself every year anew. So, you're in this stress and maybe that also put additional pressure on the person who caused the accident at that moment. But I still first imagined the relatives, the surviving dependents, the people who are left behind. This feeling that they have as a result. It was real, I got very, very, very big goose bumps all over my body. I thought to myself, oh shit. So, you leave the house just before Christmas Eve and say goodbye and don't think of anything bad, and then...

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: So that’s life. Her last hour of life was probably predetermined. She may have had a lot of fun shopping for her last presents and may have picked up the groceries at the end, then goes to the car and is already thinking about Christmas or cooking or whatever. And there is a blow and you are crushed. A heavy thing to happen. Well, I was in shock. I also had to leave the scene of the crime at the moment, had to go into the car, had to collect myself first, pretended I was going to get something and got myself so caught up in this tragic accident that I even had tears. But then I really shook myself awake again, because I mean, I'm not there to cry, I'm there to clean up the crime scene. I have then poured an enzyme cleaner on the blood stain and I then removed it with a wet vacuum cleaner. So, nothing will be visible for the people who will use this traffic area again.

Cause of Death is one of the successful true crime scene podcasts in Germany and my experiences can be heard here now: So, routine in life can be really dangerous. And especially when it happens in traffic, it suddenly becomes a deadly weapon. Not deliberately, of course, but nevertheless this routine in life is sometimes extremely dangerous. And we should remember this in life situations, whether in traffic or in our own work, where we protect ourselves or others, or even when we do something for other people who rely on us. We should really take this life routine seriously again and again and keep it in mind in these situations, these moments. Because otherwise it can happen that, despite all the routine, at the wrong moment you simply make a life mistake, which then, in case of doubt, unintentionally costs you or even much worse other people their lives.
