Air Force Veteran Amanda Huffman

Air Force Veteran Amanda Huffman

Air Force Veteran Amanda Huffman was a Civil Engineer in the Air Force. She was an officer and managed all the civil engineer troops during this time. While in the Air Force, she was deployed in Afghanistan and worked with the Army as part of the provincial reconstruction team. After that, she worked in an Air Force headquarters in Ohio, then eventually decided to transition out of the military life to be a stay-at-home mom. As with any veteran, the transition to civilian life is always challenging. To cope with the challenges, she started writing, and from that, it grew to a blog, several books, and a podcast—where she interviews women veterans and women currently serving in the military. Amanda also shares certain aspects of her military experience as an Air Force Officer, military spouse, veteran, and mom.

In this episode Sgt. BeReal’s interviews Amanda Huffman as they talk about her experience in the Air Force and the challenges that women veterans encounter during the transition as a civilian,  a military spouse, and most importantly, as a mom.

Navy Veteran Ron Suzuki

Navy Veteran Ron Suzuki

Navy Veteran Ron Suzuki served in the Navy for 15 years as an Aviation Electronics Technician.  During his time at the Navy, a mate introduced him to photography. He became a full-time photographer shortly after being honorably discharged. His photography business was doing great, but sales eventually slowed down, forcing him to work for a 9 to 5 job. During this time, he further developed his photography and videography skills and founded White Box Media- a company that aims to grow small businesses by providing commercial videography and digital marketing services.

Ron's passion for helping fellow veterans have a successful life post service has led him to the founding of GritCON. The conference emphasizes a celebration of the arts and entertainment communities. It aims to unite, educate and entertain the veteran and non-veteran communities by featuring speakers, innovators, and business personalities from all walks of life.

Marine Veteran Kyle Page

Marine Veteran Kyle Page

Marine Veteran Kyle Page started as a mechanic in US Marine Corps, deployed in Afghanistan, became a Marksmanship instructor, and was promoted as a corporal. Later in point in his career, he was discharged due to medical reasons. He has worked in several companies after his exit and eventually worked his way to be a successful realtor.

Kyle was a former guest on the show, but this time we will talk about his latest endeavor, an active member of Irreverent Warriors. Irreverent Warriors is a veteran community that brings veterans together to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide by using humor and camaraderie. Irreverent Warriors provides ideal support networks for veterans from fellow veterans, solidifying the community and camaraderie through therapeutic events like their main Silkies Hike and other events such as camping trips, holiday parties, etc. The connections and bonds made at such events allow veterans to create their own support network solving the most crucial issue contributing to veteran suicide; isolation.

In this episode, Sgt BeReal talks to revisiting guest Kyle Page and Irreverent Warriors, helping veterans with their mental health and preventing suicides.

Key points:

  • A robust support network for vets is super important.
  • The best support a veteran can have is from a fellow vet.
  • When you eliminate isolation, you eliminate suicide.

Army Veteran Lisa Peranzo

Army Veteran Lisa Peranzo

Army Veteran Lisa Peranzo, Fitness Coach, President, and CEO of A Healthful Life, enlisted in The Army via ROTC. During training, she got a severe injury that put her on the sideline for years. She underwent multiple surgeries and months of physical therapies. The Army allowed her as much time as she needed to rehabilitate and put herself in shape for the physical requirements and re-enlist.  She did recover from her injuries, but unfortunately, she couldn't re-enlist because it will expose her recovered foot to extended physical strain, which wasn't recommended. However, her desire to live healthy, take care of her well-being, and get better physically and mentally has led her to the founding of her company, A Healthful Life, an organization that focuses on a holistic and customized approach to healthy living.

In this episode, Sgt BeReal talks to Army Veteran Lisa Peranzo and how an unfortunate incident while training in the army has helped her inspire and create a fitness company.

Key points:

In most cases, healthy living isn't a cookie-cutter solution. An effective route to achieve health goals is often tailor-made to the individual.

Every individual is unique and responds to health regimens and fitness uniquely. The approach has to fit that person.

Health and well-being are interconnected with the community.

Navy Veteran Tammi Moses

Navy Veteran Tammi Moses

Navy Veteran Tammi Moses is the Founder and CEO of Homes Are For Living LLC and The Hoarding Solutions. She enlisted in the Navy when she was in senior high school. Mostly to leave her town and get the opportunity to work and travel in many different places. Tammi was stationed in USS Niagara Falls; a ship homeported in Guam. After service, she worked full-time for a state agency, went back to college, and got her bachelor's degree. She got invited into a women's veteran conference, which led her to the housing business. This stint has somehow led her to help people with hoarding problems and eventually evolved into a dedicated company to help people with hoarding problems and those impacted.

In this episode, Sgt. BeReal interviews Navy Veteran Tammi Moses and shares her stories after Navy duty and how she transitioned from service to helping people resolve their hoarding issues holistically.

Key points:

Hoarding is mostly triggered by a traumatic event. In a way, it turns into a coping mechanism.

Hoarding is a symptom of a problem. Knowing the root of the problem is key in laying out a plan to assist people suffering from hoarding issues.

It is best to try and diagnose the reason for hoarding and try to resolve it before proceeding to drastic measures.

Forced clean-out can be traumatizing because it does not resolve their hoarding problems. But, in severe cases, forced clean-out may be necessary.

Army Veteran Jedidah James Smith

Army Veteran Jedidah James Smith

Army Veteran Jedidah Smith is a former Special Forces Non-commissioned officer at 5th Special Forces Group. He is a Christian, a Husband, Dad, an Entrepreneur, and a Change Maker.

In this episode, Sgt. Be Real talks to Jedidah about his experiences in and out of the Military. They will discuss how veterans lose their sense of self and the spirit of camaraderie. They also talked about how important it is to know how to manage, not just lead.

Join us in this episode of the Veterans Be Real podcast and know how to prepare for civilian life by making the most of the last 2 years of your service. We’ll also learn some facts about civilian life by not reminiscing on the awesome stuff that we did during our Military days but to use the skills that we learned during our service.

Key Points:

You may have done awesome stuff in the Military but that doesn't mean anything when you get out, just go do your job and provide for your family

If you're in something that you don't like to do, there are alternative ways to make money out there that are honorable and can have integrity in doing

Before getting out of the Military, there needs to be a Reverse boot camp

You can be a great leader in the army but if you don't know how to manage, you're not going to be successful on the outside

Now is the time to make plans, are you going to stay in the Military or are you going to get out?

The last 2 years in the army is the fastest and most stressful 2 years of your career

Army Veteran Denny Katona

Army Veteran Denny Katona

Denny Katona enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1993.  After serving seven years as an Armor crewman, he became an active-duty Army National Guard recruiter in 2000. In 2002, Denny transferred to the Regular Army as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Non-Commissioned Officer.  Denny deployed in 2003 for the Invasion of Iraq and again in 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also deployed in 2011 to Japan in support of Operation Tomadachi, providing relief efforts after the earthquake and tsunami that hit in March 2011.

After being honorably discharged in 2012 as Staff Sergeant, Denny applied his operational planning experience to a career as a project manager.  A discipline that he has applied in both the Information Technology and Manufacturing industries.

Since leaving the Army, Denny has dedicated himself to serving the Veteran Community.  He has planned coordinated and executed fundraising events for Praying for Kaelie, Fisher House, Austin Dog Alliance, and the CPL Chad O. Foundation.  Throughout the planning and execution of these many events, Denny saw the need to bring the Veteran non-profit community together to better serve area Veterans.  Denny developed the concept, planned, and networked, bringing together over 50 nonprofits, veteran service organizations, and veteran-owned businesses for the inaugural Vet Fest Austin in November 2016. In the spirit of that collaboration and community, Denny, along with members of the Vet Fest team founded O.P. Veteran in order to lighten the ruck of area veterans and at the same time assist nonprofits to maximize their impact upon the Veteran Community.

In this episode, Sgt. BeReal chats to Denny about his experiences as an Army and after transitioning out of the Military. Denny didn’t truly know who he was after he got out of the Military. They also discussed that when you are medically discharged, you won’t have a timetable to plan your transition.

Navy Veteran Bryan Jacobs

Navy Veteran Bryan Jacobs

Navy Veteran Bryan Jacobs learned many of his kitchen skills growing up cooking alongside his grandfather, a former chef in World War II. They spent most of their summers together and in the mornings over coffee, hot chocolate, and cornflakes, they pondered the most important question of the day, which was what to make for dinner. They were practicing farm-to-table well before it became a modern-day trend.

During high school he took busboy and dishwasher positions. One day the sauté chef didn’t show up for work and Jacobs was asked to step in. The head chef was astonished by his talents and promoted him almost immediately.

Coming from a lineage of military veterans—his grandfather, father, uncles, and brother all served in different capacities—Jacobs’ interest was to go a different route and attend college. His grandfather urged him to enlist for just two years before continuing his formal education. Seven days after high school graduation, his grandfather passed away.

Jacobs excelled and ranked high in the military and was even cited for bravery in combat. The military teaches common sense, staying alive, working as a team, and brotherhood. What it doesn’t teach is how to get by in the real world. Jacobs explained that after serving the country, once veterans are back in the real world they often are unable to find work.

In 2014, Vets-2-Chefs was established as a non-profit. It falls under the umbrella of Vets- 2-Success, which are food and brew-focused programs, Jacobs created to help rehabilitate displaced veterans. The program is designed to inspire, mentor, educate, and acclimate vets who are homeless, giving them a life purpose while creating a positive impact in their local communities. (Credits to Edible Sarasota)

Let's listen to them and know how Jacobs help veterans and at the same time provide service to people as a Chef.

Army Veteran Chris Ellenburg

Army Veteran Chris Ellenburg

Army Veteran Chris Ellenburg is a North Georgia native, born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains. He joined the Army directly out of high school and served until December 2012, when he left the military with one goal in mind: to continue serving his country, by supporting our Armed Forces.

This is how Over the Edge Outdoors was born. As someone who grew up surrounded by the outdoors, Chris took his passion for nature and turned it into a way for our servicemen and women to build relationships and communities with those who shared their experiences.

In this episode, Sgt. BeReal and Chris talk about lifestyle change when you get out of the Military. They also discussed the importance of camaraderie and how to preserve its existence even when you are already out of the Military. They also pointed out that there will be challenges when you transition from the Military to civilian life.

Let’s listen to them and pick golden nuggets that can help us become the person that we want to be when we transition from Military duty to a civilian.

Navy Veteran Jose Palacios

Navy Veteran Jose Palacios

Navy veteran Jose Palacios served as a damage control man in the Navy which is the equivalent of firefighters in the civilian world. He served abroad, stationed overseas in Japan, used to pick up Marines from Okinawa then drop them off in jungles. He also did 1 tour in the Middle East for 9 months.

In this episode, Sgt BeReal and Jose talked about how challenging it is to transition from the Military duty to civilian life. They also discussed that when you work overseas or get deployed overseas, you will lose touch with your network in the civilian sector. Jose said that the Officer-in-charge for the transition assistance program was stationed in Japan for 20 years and never lived in the USA but luckily, older veterans helped him a lot with his transition and eventually became mentors.

Let’s listen to them as they tackle very important details when you are transitioning and how to use the skills you have from the Military and incorporate it into what is equivalent to the job you are applying as a civilian.

Key Points:

Making a transition from Military duty to Civilian life is very challenging

When working overseas/deployed overseas, You have lost touch with your network in the civilian sector so basically you're starting from zero

The Officer in-charge for transition assistance program was stationed in Japan for 20 years and never lived in the US.

Older veterans help him a lot with his transitions and became mentors

Transition became bad for him because he was drinking a lot and spending too much cash on stupid things

Military teaches us to be flexible, adapt, overcome and thrive

Labor educator - help companies whenever union come in and try to organize,

Use the skills you have from the Military and incorporate it to what is equivalent to the job you are applying as a civilian

Navy Veteran Thomas McConnell

Navy Veteran Thomas McConnell

Navy Diver Veteran Thomas McConnell was raised in Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana and he is the owner of 15 Fathoms Deep Sea Apparel. He used to swim competitively as a freestyle swimmer and it was really the one sport that he gravitated to. He found out about the Navy diver program and knew that’s what he wanted to do. It took him about seven months to get in shape for it, but he put in the work and got into shape.

When he showed up to dive school, they let them know that they would weed half of them out, but he was determined to make it to the end. Just as they predicted half the team washed out and they graduated with 16 after starting with 36.

After graduation, he ended up getting orders to Hawaii to be a part of a salvage unit. When ships come into foreign ports, they hop in deep-sea waters on scuba then checks and clears the piers so the sailors are clear to come in.

He spent 8 years in the Navy and when he got back in San Diego and doing a routine working dive, he lost feeling in his legs and started having a lot of neurological symptoms. This diving incident in December 2017 gave him some vestibular issues, a little bit of brain trauma, and found out that he had an unruptured brain aneurysm. He could not move on so he went on medical retirement. He retired on December 28, 2019, and moved to Canada with his wife.

In this episode, Sgt. BeReal talks to Thomas about his transition out of the Navy, his medical and mental condition, and his business. They also discussed how moving to Canada affected his ongoing treatment and life because a lot of VA benefits don’t extend overseas.
